The Unspoken Power of Language
Jo Ellen Grzyb
May 22 1999
This is an exploration of how communication (verbal and non-verbal) is hindered or helped through the way we use language. Jo Ellen Grzyb concentrates on the language choices we consciously and unconsciously make and how these affect the way we are perceived, how language shapes us from childhood and reinforces into adulthood beliefs we have about ourselves. By making different choices in the words we use, we can alter not only other people's perceptions of us, but also our own sense of self. The talk will also look at emotive language and how we can be manipulated by words and how, in turn, we manipulate others.
Jo Ellen Grzyb is co-founder and director of The Impact Factory, a training and personal development company specialising in boosting confidence and motivation in areas such as communication skills, personal effectiveness, presentation skills, team building, 'assertiveness' issues, career development and dealing with change. Jo Ellen is a counsellor, psychotherapist, broadcaster and writer. Her The Nice Factor Book (written with Robin Chandler, her fellow director at The Impact Factory) was published by Simon and Schuster in 1997. Their work is continually being written about and broadcast (TV and radio) both in the UK and abroad.
