This monograph derives from a talk given at Power of Speech: Language and Human Nature, a seminar presented by The Institute For Cultural Research in January 2000. The Author: Philip Howard was formerly Literary Editor of The Times and continues to work for that paper as what he describes as "a Third Leader hack". He is also Oped (opinion/editorial) columnist and columnist of the daily Word Watching linguistic column. He has written books of general history and social affairs as well as several about the changing English language.
