Malignant Sadness: the anatomy of depression
Speaker: Professor Lewis Wolpert, FRS
10th November 2001
In this lecture, based on his internationally best-selling book of the same title, Professor Wolpert sets out to examine, among other things, the factors that make people vulnerable to depression; why about twice as many women as men suffer from severe depression; current and future treatment; and the psychological and biological theories that have been advanced to explain the disease. Wolpert's training as a developmental biologist helps him sift through the scientific literature, while his own devastating episode of depression in the past is the basis of his eloquent descriptions.
Lewis Wolpert, FRS, is Professor of Biology at University College London. He is the author of six books, including A Passion for Science, The Triumph of the Embryo, and Passionate Minds. He is a frequent radio host and interviewer.
