Words, words, words.


Philip Howard


Journalese may well be the literary style in which more people do their reading than in any other. But what is it? Does it actually exist? Is it any good? What effect does it have upon its readers?

Philip Howard was formerly Literary Editor of The Times and continues to work for the same paper as what he describes as "a Third Leader hack". He is also Oped (opinion/editorial) columnist and columnist of the daily Word Watching linguistic column. "I also make speeches when I cannot escape." He has written books of general history and social affairs as well as several about the changing English language (Weasel Words, Hamilton, 1978; Words Fail Me, Hamilton 1980; State of the Language: English Observed, Hamilton, 1984, Penguin 1986).
