Seminar 2008

What are we doing to Planet Earth?
Sir Brian Hoskins, FRS

A discussion was given of some of the problems that are being created for Planet Earth, often as a by-product of human activity. These range from global warming to loss of biodiversity. It was argued that these are problems for us as part of the planet; it was emphasised that we can and must limit the extent of these problems through a positive response to them, based on understanding, prediction and action.

Brian Hoskins is a Royal Society Research Professor and Professor of Meteorology at the University of Reading. He is a Cambridge mathematician by training and his research area is in weather and climate, in particular understanding atmospheric motion from the scale of fronts to that of the Earth. He has received the top meteorological prizes of both the USA and UK, and is a Fellow/Member of the Scientific Academies of these countries and also of China. His international roles have included being vice-chair of the Joint Scientific Committee for the World Climate Research Programme, President of the International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences and having considerable involvement in the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Report. Nationally he has been President of the Royal Meteorological Society, his committee memberships include being on the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution, and he is currently a Non-Executive Director of the Met Office.
