Seminar 2008
Nature and daylight in healthcare buildings
Professor Roger Ulrich
Increasing research indicates that daylight or sun exposure in healthcare settings can have beneficial influences on patients and staff. Mounting evidence suggests that architectural design and siting decisions for healthcare buildings, can improve medical outcomes and reduce the costs of care, by influencing the amount of nature and daylight exposure patients receive.
Professor Roger Ulrich is Beale Endowed Professor of Health Facilities Design at Texas A&M University and a faculty fellow of the Center for Health Systems and Design, housed jointly in the colleges of architecture and medicine. During 2006 he was on research leave in London where he was Visiting Professor at University College London, and adviser on evidence-based hospital design to the Department of Health. A behavioural scientist, Professor Ulrich conducts research on the effects of medical buildings and other designed environments on medical outcomes. He has published widely and is the most frequently cited researcher internationally in the area of evidence-based healthcare design.
