Goethe's Science of Nature: Tradition and Alternative in Science
Henri Bortoft
April 25
Universally renowned as a poet and dramatist, Goethe devoted much of his time and energy to scientific work. For a long time ignored, if not rejected, the alternative to the mainstream scientific tradition which he developed has now begun to be seen in a new light. New discoveries in the philosophy of science, as well as doubts about the cultural impact of modern science, have contributed to this revival of interest.
With practical exercises on colour and the metamorphosis of plants, this seminar will explore Goethe's methodology in the context of the cultural-historical development of modern science. It will lead toward an understanding of the way in which Goethe is relevant to us today..
Henri Bortoft is an independent researcher in the philosophy of science and culture. He is the author of a comprehensive book on Goethe's way of science, The Wholeness of Nature. He lectures and gives seminars and workshops on Goethean science and the development of modern scientific consciousness both here and in the USA.
