Half-day Seminars 1998

FIVE HALF-DAY SEMINARS
pursuing the general topic of approaches to problem-solving
on alternate Saturdays
April 25, May 9 and
May 23 June 6 and
June 20 1998
The University of Westminster 309 Regent Street London W1

Following the Institute's successful Human Solutions: Problem-solving and Society held in January 1998, these five shorter seminars return to the same theme. Eight speakers will be looking at the perennial stimuli which are at work in human problem-solving, each taking a very different point of view.

Kevin Byron sets out to open up the creative and inventive process; Henri Bortoft examines the scientific view adopted by J.W. von Goethe and its potential as a complement, even an alternative, to modern reductionism. Trevor Hilder and Keith Laws investigate why we find complex problems so hard to solve and what we might do about that particular problem. From quite another angle, Joseph Griffin and Pat Williams describe the active role played by metaphor, story and image in the ways we learn to understand our lives. Finally David Reilly and Gerard Bodeker point out the extraordinary rise in the demand for complementary medicine - not only in the West but in the developing world. What are the stimuli for such a demand, what problems does it imply and seek to solve?
